The Storms and Floods Battering Britain by Shannon and Kira

Hello we are reporting from ARK Kings Academy. Today we will be talking about storms and flooding, the disruption they cause and the reasons behind the rise of extreme weather.

For the past couple of months there has been a series of severe floods and storms that have been causing disruption across the country. The south of England has been particularly badly affected, with Harriet, one of our Year 8 students, experiencing a hurricane when on holiday in Bognor Regis.

We asked Harriet a series of questions about her experience of the hurricane. Harriet reported that it started off as strong winds and you could hear it against the caravan and then it grew bigger. Eventually a huge tree fell down and went through the roof of the caravan. We then asked Harriet how she felt while it was happening and this is what she said “I felt very scared!”

Understanding the causes of extreme weather

We then interviewed the Geography teacher Mr.Walker to we ask him how storms affect the UK today? He reported “because of the climate change we’ve had bad storms and its making a lot of floods which cost a lot to repair. Some people have even lost electricity for over 24 hours and have been unable to cook food, whilst in wales a train nearly got washed off the rails because of the weather.”

We then asked him how bad can a flood get in the uk? He reported “it depends where you are. If its flat ground it isn’t that bad but if it is a serious flood most places will get wrecked”.

The last question we asked Mr Walker was whether he had ever been in a bad storm and, if so, where? He reported back saying “I haven’t been in a very bad storm but I have driven during a heavy rain shower that almost caused me to crash”.

From our reporting it is clear that storms are going to be a feature of our lives for many years to come.

Getting Ready for the National Spelling Bee by Shannon

ARK Kings Academy Spelling Bee Team 2014

This month in school we have been taking part in a spelling bee competition. We have been doing it so that 3 people out of each year group can go to London to compete against other schools in the ARK Schools National Spelling Bee competition!

I loved taking part in the spelling bee competition because I like to spell hard words and compete against other people. I found the word circumstantial hard but I got it in the end.

Sadly, I was not selected for the ARK Kings team that will be travelling to Evelyn Grace Academy in London this Thursday for the National Spelling Bee competition. I hope they do well at the competition and I get the chance to compete in future competitions.

The 28th February was the day when the chicks arrived at our school. There were 9 chick eggs and only 7 of them eventually hatched. The first chick hatched on the 3rd March and that chick was a girl called Thunder because it is loud and stubborn. The last one was called Lightening because is can run fast and gets along with Thunder. Nurture at ARK Kings Academy was very welcoming to the new arrivals and the school has been welcoming too. There is one boy that called his chick his son and has named it Redwing.

All of the chicks have got different things about them that we love. But what we love about them most is that they are all different and we can tell which one is ours because they know who we are. Hopefully one of our teachers will take some of the chicks home. If they do, then we will know that they are going to a good home and they will be looked after in the future. The chicks will be going to the farm on 13th March. Hopefully Mr Horner will take them home because he is a good person to look after the chicks and chickens.

The school will be sad to see them leave but we wish them all the best.

Thai boxing is an after school club that teaches you about self-defence. Miss Redhead is the teacher that is in charge of this club and many students take part every Thursday. Thai boxing is traditional martial art in which the fists, elbows, knees, and bare feet may all be used to deliver blows.

Year 7 Castle Project Report by Shannon

This term, Miss Drayton and Ms Thompson set us a homework project which was to research medieval castles. We were really excited to build and design our own castles. Here are a few examples of how we brought our castles to life.

A new thing has been introduced to the school called Band Musicianship and that is a project where some people from London have come to teach us how to play all kinds of instruments like:

  • Drums
  • Guitar
  • Piano
  • Singing

The one I have been working on is piano and I was okay. The one I’m looking forward to is guitar because it is my favourite instrument.
